Build TogetHER Women in Trades Scholarship

In B.C., women represent only four per cent of the construction trade workforce. In other skilled trades, that number is even smaller.

Studies and industry reports show that a large population of skilled trade workers are gearing up for retirement. An estimated 300,000 new workers will need to be recruited from outside the construction industry over the next 10 years to compensate for this gap.

This is an enormous opportunity for women seeking secure, well-paid and fulfilling employment.

Build TogetHER, the women’s committee of the British Columbia Building Trades, establishes one scholarship for a woman pursuing a rewarding career in the construction trades. The scholarship is generously funded by B.C. Insulators Local 118.

Bursary Amount:
$1,000 to the successful candidate.

Criteria:
Applicants must be enrolled in a Building Trades-union-recognized trades training program, and; submit a 500-word essay on the topic, “What I’m doing/have done/plan to do to advance women in the trades.”

BuildTogetHER will consider the applicant’s commitment to initiatives that promote and support women in the trades and their dedication to the trade union movement. The committee will also consider financial need and the applicant’s position within their respective trade.

The successful applicants will be awarded their scholarship upon confirmation of enrolment in a Building Trades-union-recognized training program.

Applicants must be Canadian citizens.

Application Deadline:
January 31, 2020
